In Age of Reforging: The Freelands, players are chosen by the goddess of fate to take on the role of a “reforger”, and must venture out into The Freelands, a land devoid of law and populated by outlaws and other evil forces. Featuring a number of different races with varying talents, including Human, Elf, Dwarf and Grey Orc, players can choose a class that best suits their playstyle and customise them using over 70 adjustable appearance options.
Once the reforger sets foot in the Freelands, their adventure is their own. Age of Reforging: The Freelands prides itself on total freedom, offering a core questline as well as a plethora of side missions which can be procured throughout the various towns scattered across The Freelands, as well as by other means. Quests present multiple endings, creating a branching narrative that makes each playthrough unique.
Venturing through The Freelands alone can be dangerous, so expanding and developing a party of invaluable teammates is essential to survival. There are currently 9 characters available to recruit, each with their own unique fighting styles and principles of right and wrong. With their own stories and missions, companions are eager to weigh in with their thoughts as players choose a path throughout the game, with choices impacting how much - or little - your teammates warm to them. Allocating attribute points and gear will decide the usefulness of the player’s squad, and will have to be done diligently based on resources available.
In a land without law, mastering combat is key. Age of Reforging: The Freelands utilises a system similar to the Baldur’s Gate franchise, in which characters are commanded predominantly through mouse clicks. Formations and combat preferences can be set for each squad member, and tactical triggers can also be configured to adjust teammate behaviour. Players will still have to pick their battles wisely, but there’s plenty of options to ensure versatility in all combat situations.
Time will also be the enemy as Age of Reforging: The Freelands also shrewdly intertwines survival elements, and as players traverse its expansive sandbox world, they will have to remain conscious of their hunger and fatigue status which gradually accumulates as time passes. Food can be scavenged through various means, and setting up camp regularly will offer you and your teammates much-needed reprieve, however, failing to take action as your squad physically declines will result in dire consequences.
